The experience

Find the route.
Reach the top.

Climbing walls turn a vertical surface into a physical and mental challenge that visitors can take on at their own pace.

A climbing wall uses manufactured grips, or holds, for the hands and feet to create different routes up a purpose-built or adapted structure. Routes can vary in difficulty, allowing beginners and more confident climbers to share the same attraction.

While climbing walls are commonly associated with indoor facilities, East Africa's climate creates exciting opportunities for outdoor climbing experiences as well. Existing stone structures can sometimes be adapted, or new structures can be created using timber, steel and other suitable materials.

The result can be both a recreational attraction and a personal challenge — encouraging concentration, movement, confidence and a little friendly competition on the journey to the top.

01 Challenge

Different routes can offer progressive levels of difficulty.

02 Movement

Encourage balance, strength, coordination and problem-solving.

03 Achievement

Give each climber a clear goal — make it to the top.

From surface to summit

What goes into
a climbing wall.

The wall itself is only part of the attraction. The structure, routes, intended users, operating environment and supporting systems all need to work together.

01
Site

Location & Structure Assessment

We consider the available space, proposed wall height, surrounding environment and whether an existing structure can be adapted or a new structure should be created.

02
Audience

User & Difficulty Planning

The wall can be shaped around children, adults, beginners, experienced users or a combination of different ability levels.

03
Design

Wall & Route Design

Wall geometry and hold placement can create different routes, movement patterns and levels of challenge across the same structure.

04
Build

Engineering & Construction

Depending on the site and concept, the climbing structure can use timber, steel, existing masonry or other appropriate construction systems.

05
Operations

Equipment & Staff Preparation

The attraction needs appropriate operating procedures, equipment and trained staff suited to the type and height of climbing experience being offered.

06
Support

Inspection & Maintenance

Routine checks of the structure, holds, equipment and operating environment help support reliable long-term use.

Built around the setting

Indoors.
Or under the sky.

Climbing walls are flexible enough to work in enclosed recreation facilities, outdoor adventure destinations and everything in between.

01

Outdoor Walls

Make climbing part of the wider landscape and outdoor adventure environment.

02

Indoor Walls

Create controlled climbing experiences within gyms, schools and recreation facilities.

03

Existing Structures

Where appropriate, existing stone or structural surfaces can become part of the experience.

04

Purpose-Built Walls

Start from scratch and shape the structure specifically around the desired climbing experience.

Why climbing?

Adventure at
your own pace.

Unlike an attraction where every visitor follows exactly the same experience, a climbing wall can offer many different challenges on one structure.

Route difficulty, height and climbing style can be varied to keep the experience interesting while giving visitors clear opportunities to progress.
